After acquiring the rights to water, hammers, and mills of ancient paper mills that had been operating along the course of the Posina stream and in the upper Val d'Astico since the end of the 1500s, in 1873 Alessandro Rossi, an industrialist from Schio who already owned Lanificio Rossi, founded the "Consorzio della Fabbrica della Carta" (Paper Factory Consortium) in Arsiero. Five years later, in 1878, his son Francesco founded Cartiera Rossi in the hamlet of Perale, in the Municipality of Arsiero: this was a large factory, which, in only a few years, became the largest European paper mill of the time and, at one point, employed over 1300 people.
During the First World War, the paper mill, which was located on the Italian-Austrian front, was bombed and destroyed. The activities resumed after the war, albeit with a strong downsizing of both the production volume and the number of people employed.
After World War II, the paper mill specialized in the production of fine and special papers, especially cigarette paper and tissue paper for industrial use, as well as in the processing of crepe and coloured paper. In the Seventies, printed and perforated tipping paper used for making cigarette filters were added to the traditional products.
At the beginning of the new millennium, after more than 120 years of uninterrupted activity, the Rossi family sold the company. After changing hands a number of times, the current structure was defined between 2005 and 2008: the property is now in the hands of Mr Antonio Sbalchiero, the former plant manager who proudly carries on the quality tradition of the historic brand "CR" with the help of his sons.
